The first real decision in a Rajasthan trip is not where to stay. It is how many days you have, because that decides how much of the state you can honestly see.
Here is what fits in each length.

The options, by length
| Days | Route | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|
| 4–5 | Golden Triangle — Delhi, Agra, Jaipur | Monuments, not Rajasthan. Good first taste. |
| 6–7 | Jaipur – Jodhpur – Udaipur | Three distinct cities, comfortable pace |
| 8–9 | Jaipur – Jodhpur – Jaisalmer – Udaipur | Adds the desert. The best all-round circuit. |
| 10–12 | The above plus Pushkar, Bikaner, Mount Abu or Ranthambore | Unhurried, with room for one slow day |
Golden Triangle: what it actually is
Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Two of those three are not in Rajasthan at all.
It is a monuments circuit — Red Fort, Taj Mahal, Amber Fort — and it is excellent for a first trip to India. But if you came for Rajasthan specifically, you will see one city of it.

Why eight days is the sweet spot
Jaisalmer is what most people remember from Rajasthan, and it is the city a short trip always cuts. Getting there needs a day of travel in each direction, which only works once you are past a week.
Eight days gives you: a fort city (Jaipur), a blue city (Jodhpur), a desert (Jaisalmer) and a lake city (Udaipur). Four genuinely different places rather than four variations of the same one.
The distances nobody checks first
- Jaipur to Jodhpur: about 6 hours by road
- Jodhpur to Jaisalmer: about 5 hours
- Jaisalmer to Udaipur: about 10 hours — this is the leg people underestimate
- Udaipur to Jaipur: about 6 hours
That Jaisalmer–Udaipur stretch is why the order matters. Done the wrong way round you spend a full day in a car in the middle of your holiday.

A sensible 8-day shape
- Day 1–2 — Jaipur: Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar
- Day 3–4 — Jodhpur: Mehrangarh, the blue lanes, Jaswant Thada
- Day 5–6 — Jaisalmer: fort and havelis, then a desert camp overnight
- Day 7–8 — Udaipur: City Palace, Lake Pichola at sunset, a slow last day
Fly out of Udaipur rather than driving back to Jaipur. It saves a whole day.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do Rajasthan in 5 days?
You can do two cities well, or three badly. Jaipur and Udaipur is the best five-day pair.
Is Jaisalmer worth the travel time?
For most guests, it is the highlight of the trip. If you have eight days or more, yes. Under that, skip it rather than rush it.
Best season?
October to March. December and January are coldest at night and busiest.
Train or car between cities?
A private car for the circuit — the stops between cities are half the point. Train works well for the Delhi–Jaipur and Jodhpur–Jaisalmer legs specifically.
