Udaipur has a long list of “places to visit” and a much shorter list of places that reward the time. Two and a half days covers the city properly. Here is what that time is best spent on, and what can go if your trip is shorter.

The four that are not optional

City Palace

The largest palace complex in Rajasthan, built up over roughly four centuries by successive Mewar rulers, which is why it reads as several buildings rather than one. Allow two and a half hours. Go at opening — by 11am the corridors between courtyards become a queue. The Crystal Gallery is a separate ticket and is genuinely optional; the museum route is not.

Lake Pichola by boat

The sunset boat from Rameshwar Ghat is the single best hour in Udaipur, and the reason is simple: the city was designed to be seen from the water. Jag Mandir island is included on most boat tickets. Book the sunset slot in advance in season — it sells out, and the earlier slots are not the same experience.

Jagdish Temple

Fifteen minutes, a hundred metres from the City Palace entrance, and worth stopping for the carving on the plinth rather than the interior. Aarti in the evening is short and unshowy.

Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace)

The hilltop palace itself is largely empty. You go for the view over the lakes and the Aravallis at sunset. The last stretch of road is inside a wildlife sanctuary with its own entry fee, and private vehicles are usually stopped partway — the shared jeep from there is part of the deal, not a scam.

Worth it if you have the time

The half-day trips that change the trip

These are outside the city and are what turn a two-day Udaipur stop into a proper Mewar leg:

How to sequence it

Day 1: City Palace at opening, lunch near Gangaur Ghat, Jagdish Temple, sunset boat, Bagore ki Haveli show.
Day 2: Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur as a full day out.
Day 3 (half day): Ahar Cenotaphs and Saheliyon ki Bari in the morning, Sajjangarh at sunset.

If you only have two days, drop Kumbhalgarh rather than compressing it — it is a four-hour round trip and does not survive being rushed.

Practical notes

Our Udaipur itinerary guide lays out the 2, 3 and 4 day versions in full, and the month by month guide covers when the lakes are actually full.

Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and we will put together the Udaipur leg with a private car and a driver who knows the fort roads.
