Every Jaisalmer package puts you in a desert camp, but there are two very different places those camps sit — Sam and Khuri — and nobody explains the difference before you book.

Thar desert dunes near Jaisalmer

Sam Sand Dunes

About 40 km west of Jaisalmer. The classic dunes: tall, wide, photogenic, and the ones in every photo of Rajasthan you have ever seen.

It is also the busy one. In peak season the sunset point has camel trains, jeeps and a lot of people. The camps range from basic tent clusters to properly built luxury resorts, and the gap between the two is enormous.

Khuri

About 45 km south-west. Smaller dunes, a real village beside them, and a fraction of the crowd.

If what you want is silence, stars and a village you can walk into, Khuri is the better evening. If you want the postcard dune shot, Sam has it.

Which should you pick?

First trip to Jaisalmer: Sam, in a good camp. The dunes are the reason you came and these are the ones worth seeing.

Second trip, or a honeymoon: Khuri. Fewer people between you and the horizon.

Travelling with parents or small children: Sam, because the camps there are better equipped and closer to help if anything is needed.

The thing that matters more than the location

Honestly? The camp itself. A good camp at Sam beats a poor camp at Khuri and the reverse is just as true.

What separates them:

We only use camps we have stayed in. That is the whole of the filter.

Frequently asked questions

Can we visit Sam for the sunset and sleep in Khuri?
Possible but not sensible — it is an hour between them in the dark. Pick one.

Is the camel ride compulsory?
No. A jeep to the sunset point works just as well, and is easier on backs and knees.

Are the dunes open all year?
Yes, but April to June is punishing and the monsoon brings flies. October to March is the season.

Is it safe for women travelling in a small group?
Yes at an established camp with proper staffing. We would not put a small group in an unmanned tent cluster.

Not sure which one suits you?
